Started in 2017, Crawl Below is a music project based out of Norwich, Connecticut that spans multiple genres.

The first album, 2018's "Welcome The Possession" is a blend of black metal and d-beat punk, crust, and hardcore.  Combining fully-strummed Euronymous chords with melodic punk progressions and catchy hardcore choruses, the album was understood and enjoyed by tens of people.

The second album, "We Approach The Altar Only In Darkness" (2019) took a radical shift: Lovecraftian acoustic pub songs.  Still dark and weird, "We Approach" was appreciated by at least 8 more people than the previous album and is so far CB's biggest seller.

"9 Mile Square" is a concept album, released in February 2021.  Based on the project's hometown of Norwich CT, this release ventures into post-metal/doomgaze territory, with clean vocals and slow, melodically layered guitars.  This album was mixed by Dave Kaminsky at Studio Wormwood and mastered by Ryan Williams (ex-Black Dahlia Murder) at Augmented Audio in Los Angeles.

The next album, "It's Ministers On Earth" veered yet again, this time moving into blackened death/doom territory.  Recording was completed in November 2020 and the album was released in late 2021.  The album was met with critical yawning.

The fifth album "Around The Circle, Around The Snake" was released in January 2023.  The weirdest one yet, the album is a mix of black metal, conspicuously programmed drums, and strange church elements like organ and monk chants.   The album was featured on Antifascist Black Metal Network's youtube page but otherwise was ignored, which is kind of too band because I like it the best of the CB albums.  But hey, there's a thin line between "cult obscurity" and "honestly, nobody cares", right?  Right?

The sixth album will be the beginning of a trilogy no one asked for called "Night Janitor" and will continue in the black metal vein.

Review Flash

I never would have thought that a project that describes their sound as confusing as CRAWL BELOW (Black Metal, D-Beat Punk, Doomgaze, Acoustic, and Post Metal) would manage to get me hooked that fast, I don’t know about the Black Metal influences (I can’t make out any) but for me this is Doom / Goth Rock with a strong post Grunge feeling to it and a whiff of nineties Alternative Rock. The artist behind this one-man show is called Charlie Sad Eyes and he is a multi-instrumentalist (a good one by the way). And although he once said he rips of Pete Steele and early LIFE OF AGONY, I must state that I like him better than both examples for comparisons. To just say CRAWL BELOW sounds like a band along the lines of TYPE O NEGATIVE or LIFE OF AGONY would be just lazy writing and I was called many things but not ‘Lazy Writer’ (ok, maybe on Tinder). This is a modern take on classic, melodic music that would be great for a movie soundtrack (THE CROW reboot anyone?). Just check this out and enjoy it.

Conclusion: If you like stuff like TYPE O NEGATIVE or UNTO OTHERS this will push your buttons.

Rating: 8 / 10

"doom-infused post-metal" Crawl Below streaming track "Kingdom of the Ruined" ahead of February 2021 release
On February 12th, 2021 the one-person project Crawl Below (U.S.) will issue the album 9 Mile Square. The music is mellow and emotional though still in the category of heavy rock as a sound. It is melodic throughout while keeping the mood sad. Fans of melancholic or sad metal music--whether you call it doom, post-metal, emo metal, ambient metal or whatever else it is that you prefer to name it--may find the music to be considerably interesting. Below, where you will also find the official information, you will hear one song from the new work. As additional information, below you will also find previous recordings by Crawl Below. However, one important word of caution should be stated here: The previous recordings included below do not sound like this one. In fact, listen to the new song, and then expect an entire recording in that style: a grey, melancholic, mellow, melodic sound with that type of Romanticist or Gothic male vocals. If you are curious, be sure to hear the previous recordings, but just be aware that the 2021 work will not have any black metal or extreme metal tendencies, and certainly no gremlin-witch shrieking vocals. -Metal Bulletin Zine
